Shiptalk - Life at Sea Survey 2007/08
Career Progression and Promotion

Welcome to this the fourth in the series of our life at sea surveys.

Click here to complete this survey

When we were at sea it was simple, you kept your nose clean and your head down and one day you might get promoted provided you were in the right place at the right time. You did your time in the junior ranks before reaching the heady heights of Ch. Off / Captain or 2/E/O or C/E/O. The Captain more often that not resembled the popular stereo type, you know, eldest onboard, weather worn features, authority on all thinks nautical, grey beard, you get the picture.

There are suggestions from certain quarters that times they may be a changing? With younger and younger officers reaching the heady heights of a command being fast tracked through the ranks, it has turned traditional views on seagoing career progression on its head.

In this survey we ask if promotion is important to you, does your employer have proper appraisal systems in place to check on an individual officers' suitability for promotion, are people usually promoted on merit or availability? We also ask if the heightening risk of personal liability amongst senior officers with respect to accidents and pollution incidents has taken the shine of your promotional aspirations and much, much more……

Getting Started

This is your chance to tell the world about life at sea the way you see it. We don't know if it will make a difference. We do know that unless you speak you can never be heard, so give us your views and opinions.

This survey has 30 multiple choice questions that should take no more than about 10 minutes to complete. There is no right or wrong answer and no-one will be able to tell who gave which response. We do not want to know any personal information that could be used to identify you. The very last question asks if you want us to know your email address, in case you want more information from us. You do not have to answer this question. If you want to keep your email address secret you can.

Even if you don't have time to be part of this survey please tell your colleagues about it so they can make their voices heard.

If you want to make a difference and make your voice heard now please click on the link below.
